This is a symbol because it is a completely arbitrary sign in that it only shows the speed limit and thats it. This sign is everywhere on every road to try and control the speed of traffic. The yellow is a symbol for caution or slow down.
This is both a sign and an index because it is prohibiting smoking on campus. This sign uses the red slash line to show you what not to do on school grounds. No tobacco is prohibited on school grounds. This sign is attempting to control smokers from smoking where there are younger children.
This is a symbol because its words and does not depict the flammable liquids. This is typically used in work sites and factories where there are harmful chemicals. They use the red to show its importance and to try to control the behavior of the people around it. The red is supposed to make you stop and be careful.

Hi Amanda. Good effort here. Don’t forget that multiple kinds of signs can interact to create meaning and effect within one road sign. If you went back to these signs, what kinds of different signs are working within the last two? Also, how is indexicality integral to the first sign? Laurie

I agree with all your responses to the pictures that you chose. These signs are very straight forward and are easily distinguishable in which category they belong in. They all seem right to me.

Hey Amanda. I agree with all of your labels except for the middle sign; you must have made a typo when posting. It appears this sign is located on some campus, maybe some kind of college or high school, and aims to curb the use of tobacco. Apparently there’s some kind of ordinance against it. The rule enforcers use the image of a crossed out cigarette and something else I can’t quite make out. The words describe the law, therefore the words and the pictures are symbols of the meaning: don’t smoke here. I could see it outside a building where students hang out. I was a bit confused why you marked it as an index, but I suppose it’s because it is indicating the campus as a “no zone” for tobacco use?
